1939 Belmont 636 Pre-War Automatic AM/BC Bakelite Radio

Pre-war Art-deco Table Radio in Beautiful and Working Condition

In a Nutshell
Selective and sensitive, plays nicely due to its 6th RF amplifier tube

Introduction:
The Belmont Radio Corporation in radio-Mecca Chicago was in radio business since the mid 1920's. As most industrial enterprises also Belmont fell into deep sleep, when WWII took over civil production. Belmont radios are famous and wanted by collectors for their modern, streamlined bakelite cabinets, their beautiful shiny station dials ("Enameloid Cloisonette"), and their automatic station tuning. The unique five or six pushbutton mechanism was invented by Alexander W. Plensler in 1937, and used up to 1948. It can be easily programmed by loosing the right-side tuning knob. Belmont made radios also under other names like Airline, Coronado and Truetone. This model 636 precedes the famous "Rabbit" models 534 and 638, made before WWI and 5D128 and 6D111 continued after the war, the early models easily identifyable by the dogbone resistors used in their chassis'. Belmont plastic radios were available in plain brown bakelite (Insurok) and in ivory finish. Other colors are plenty, but likely refinished. Unfortunately UV exposure can make the bakelite surface dull and pourous. The original glossy sheen then cannot be restored without refinishing it. Although repainting in bright colors is more sexy, the least invasive method is to give it a thin clearcoat of shellac, which is very durable. The radio has a conventional All-American Five chassis, supplemented by an extra HF preamplifiwer (12SK7). When setting automatic stations no access to the chassis is needed, all you need is a penny to temporarily loosen the screw in the center of the tuning knob.

About my radio:
The radio is in pristine as new condition, the cabinet has been refinished with a thin clear shellac layer. The Enameloid Cloisonette dial and its lens are original and intact. The knowingly delicate speaker cone has some repair. All caps, including the two filter caps are still original and working perfectly (no hum). The 35L6 audio tube has been substituted by a 50L6 in order to go easy on the heater string without compromising on volume. All electrical contacts have been treated with contact spray. The radio including its automatic tuning plays fine, as shown in a youtube video (ref.2 or click on thumbnail 32).
