Beautiful 1906 Columbia BK 2-minute Cylinder Graphophone, the "Jewel", with Witch's Hat Horn and Lyric Reproducer, in Museum-like Condition
In a Nutshell
The low priced model BK "Jewel" was Columbia's most popular graphophone of the new 1906 series of B graphophones with Lyric reproducer. ln a beautiful quarter sawed oak cabinet, with a 2-spring motor playing 3 cylinders in a row and the loud Lyric reproducer it was a bargain at the price of $20
Introduction:
The compact size and the low price of $20 made Columbia's 1906 Model BK "Jewel" graphophone an instant success and favourite of the public. It features a quality quarter sawed oak cabinet with 2-spring motor, playing with one winding 3 records in a row, and the famous Columbia Lyric 2-minute reproducer, that replaced the floating model.
All four 1906 B series graphophones (BK Jewel, BE Leader, BF Peerless [I have one for sale too], BG Sovereign) were decorated with the beautiful graphophone and Grand Prize decals. The Grand Prix at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, the Double Grand Prize at the 1904 Expo in St. Louis, the Triple Grand Prix at the 1906 Fair in Milano and others were used by Columbia extensively as proof of the superior quality of their records and graphophones over their competitors.
About my graphophone:
The quarter sawed oak cabinet is in mint condition with original finish and the two original decals being complete (picts.17,18). A paper label inside the cabinet identifies the machine as a model BK, another paper label on top of the bed plate contains patent information but is hard to read (pict.22). Bedplate with pinstriping and the upper works exhibit normal wear, but no corrosion or chips to the black japan finish. The crank is original and fits perfectly, but may be not authentic to this model. The 2-spring motor, gears and governor are all work fine. The horn is a 14" black and brass witch's hat horn, probably an older replica as evidenced by the missing beaded seam between cone and bell. The Lyric T-3 reproducer is perfect and has a good stylus (picts.25-27) , producing clear sound as can be verified by watching a youtube video (ref.1) or clicking on pict.31. We play the 1907 Edison black wax gold moulded 2-minute cylinder #9521, announced "Banjo Solo '"Popularity March' played by Vess L. Ossman, Edison record".
Ossman and Fred Van Epps were the two most famous and prolific Banjoists of their time, pioneering ragtime and early Jazz recordings.
